Device layout

The structure of the Serial ID number is based on the following. Each ID starts with "CMS" (Controlant identifier) followed by "30", which is used to identify Saga loggers. The last six characters are based on the hexadecimal numeral system that uses decimal numbers (0–9) and six letters: A, B, C, D, E, and F. The numbering happens in sequential order, the first device of each type is given a start number, and the numbering continues for the next in ascending numerical order.

There are two buttons on the device located under the display. The device only acknowledges a button press after you hold the button for 5-8 seconds. This delay is to prevent accidental button pressing during a shipment. Please note that if you hold the button for longer than 12 seconds, the button press is invalid.

To start or stop a shipment using the buttons, follow these steps

1️⃣ Press and hold the

Status
colourGreen
titlestart button
/
Status
colourRed
titlestop button
for 5-8 seconds to activate/deactivate the device.

2️⃣ The

Status
colourYellow
titleShipment LED
lights up when the device registers the button press as valid and remains on for 3 seconds. The lit-up led light means that you can release the button.

Note

The action is invalid if you keep pressing the

Status
colourGreen
titleStart button
or the
Status
colourRed
titlestop button
for more than 12 seconds.

Note

You should only press the

Status
colourGreen
titlestart button
or the
Status
colourRed
titlestop button
once every 60 seconds. If you press the buttons more than once within a minute, only the first command is valid (i.e., the LED will not turn on for 3 seconds).

When you press a button, the device wakes up. It attempts to connect to the Controlant cloud-enabled Supply Chain Monitoring (SCM) platform. You can only trigger a "button press" wake-up once every 30 minutes.

Display

The Saga logger has an E-Ink display that updates regularly to indicate the device status. Therefore, the display does not show real-time information; instead, it receives information during each update.

The device does not require battery power to display the data, only when updating the displayed information. It can display temperature in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F) depending on the configuration.

Display details

Display sections

The display area has five sections. See the image below.

Display functionality

The following events trigger the display to be updated

1️⃣ Change in the

Status
titleShipment Status

2️⃣ Change in the

Status
titlelast cloud connection status

3️⃣ There's a temperature value update every 10 minutes when the device measures the temperature. If there has been a change since the last measurement, the following data on the display updates too:

  • Alarm status

  • Minimum/Maximum temperature (when the device is in shipping mode)

  • Battery percentage

4️⃣ The battery icon updates when the device is plugged in to a charger. A battery symbol with a flash is displayed, no percentage shown.

5️⃣ Once the logger is fully charged — but still plugged in to a charger — a battery symbol with a flash is displayed, accompanied by 100% value.

6️⃣ The battery icon updates when the device is unplugged from a charger. A battery symbol with percentage is shown.

Shipment status

The available modes for the device are the following:

Standby mode

A device that has not received shipment information shows the text

Status
titleFree
at the
Status
titleshipment status
. It also shows the last measured temperature, the remaining battery level, and the
Status
titlecloud connection status
.

Paired mode

When a device has received shipment information from the cloud, but starting conditions have not been met, the

Status
titleShipment status
shows the text
Status
titlepaired

Shipping mode

A device in a shipment shows

Status
titleshipping
at the
Status
titleshipment status
. The image here displays a device in shipment with an
Status
titleactive alarm
(indicated with an
Status
titleAlarm icon
🔔 ). The
Status
titleCloud connection status
shows that the last sync/connection was successful. The maximum temperature value is above the latest measured temperature, and the minimum temperature is below. The alarm icon is present depending on the rules of the shipment.

For example: if the rules are that the temperature should not go above 24°C and the max is 24.8°C, then the alarm icon is visible. If there's no such a rule, there's no

Status
titlealarm icon
either.

Shipping mode - still in ignore-period

When the device receives the shipment information before the end of the ignore-period, the Min and Max values will show -.-°C. After that, it shows the minimum and maximum temperature during the shipment.

Stopping mode

If the

Status
colourRed
titleStop button
is pressed while a device is in a shipment, the text displayed in the
Status
titleShipment status
will change to
Status
titleStopping
.

Info

If all stop conditions are met before the display has refreshed to show

Status
titleSTOPPing
, it goes right to
Status
titleSTopped
.

Stopped mode

If a shipment is successfully stopped (i.e., all stop conditions are met), the

Status
titleShipment status
will show the text
Status
titlestopped
until:

  • The start of a new shipment, or

  • The device is charging, or

  • Twenty-four hours have passed.

Info

If an

Status
titleAlarm icon
🔔 appeared during the shipment, it will also stay on the screen until one of the above conditions are met.

If conditions for stopping the shipment are not met, the

Status
titleShipment status
shows
Status
titleshipping
again.

Cloud connection status

Booting up

The

Status
titleCloud connection status
is empty when the device boots up.

Syncing

The

Status
titleCloud CONNECTION status
shows a
Status
titlesyncing icon
when connecting to and syncing with the cloud.

Connected to the cloud

If sync to the cloud is successful, the

Status
titleCloud CONNECTION status
will show a
Status
titlecloud icon with a checkmark
, indicating a successful cloud connection.

Connection fails, or sync is not completed

If a connection fails or sync is not completed (e.g., due to a bad cellular connection), the

Status
titleCloud CONNECTION status
will show a
Status
titlecloud icon with an X
. The icon stays like this until the device attempts to sync again. Then it shows a
Status
titlesyncing icon
until it can indicate the actual status of the connection.

Note

This means the display can show relatively old information, depending on the wake-up interval setting (differing from 1-12 hours). The default wake-up interval is 12 hours when a device is not in a shipment.

Flight mode

Flight mode is automatically activated during flights. When the device is in flight mode, the display indicates to the user that the flight mode is active by showing the

Status
titleflight icon
in the lower right corner of the display. The display continues to update during flight mode whenever there's a change in the measured temperature, though it doesn't attempt to establish a connection to the cloud to upload data.

"Device needs service" status

At Controlant we actively and routinely monitor the Saga device fleet to optimize performance and identify potential issues. If a device requires service, the display will update to

Status
titleDevice needs service
after it has woken up and connected to the Controlant cloud as shown below.

Info

The device can only display the message when its status is free (not paired or shipping). We encourage you to set such devices aside and follow the existing process to return them.

Note

If a device is already recalled and showing

Status
titleDevice needs service
when it is put in a shipment, the display will change to normal shipping behavior after the device has been paired to a shipment and the function of the device will not be restricted. This is, however, not recommended as the device might have potential issues.

The table below explains further what the device will display after receiving the service message, depending on the shipment status.

Temperature alarms during a shipment

When the device is in a shipment with one or more temperature warnings defined, the device can enter an

Status
titleAlarm state
if the temperature goes outside the specified boundaries and time limit. The alarms that trigger the
Status
titleAlarm state
depend on the severity settings (low, medium, and high) used to determine whether a manual inspection is required after the shipment is delivered.

Admin users in Account admin can modify this on the SCM platform (SCM Settings → Require manual inspection for shipments with). The default behavior is that the

Status
titleAlarm state
is activated if the excursion severity is medium or higher.

If an event occurred that triggers the alarm state during the shipment, the

Status
titleAlarm state
is visible on the device in two places:

  • The

    Status
    colourRed
    titleAlarm led
    blinks.

  • The display shows the

    Status
    titleAlarm icon
    🔔 .

Light events during a shipment

The Saga logger has a light sensor positioned below the display.

The device measures light intensity every 10 seconds and compares the last measurement value to the current one. It reports a

Status
titlelight event
if it reaches a certain threshold in change. Subtle changes in light intensity (e.g., sunrise and sunset), do not trigger an event.

Light events only appear in the SCM system and not on the device itself. A maximum of six events are logged every hour. If more than six events occur per hour, the latest events are discarded until the oldest event is more than 1 hour (60 minutes) old.

In

Status
titlehibernation mode
, the light sensor turns off, and
Status
titlelight events
are not detected.

Wake-up behavior

Info

When a device wakes up, the modem is turned on. The device attempts to connect to the cellular network, the Controlant cloud, and services to fetch information, upload data, or update the firmware. It wakes up at various intervals, depending on its status and other events.

  • A device not in a shipment is considered to be in

    Status
    titleStandby mode
and wakes up every 12 hours. There are exceptions, as detailed below.

    • A device in a

      Status
      titleDRAFT shipment
behaves as if it is not registered to a shipment because the creation of the shipment has not been finalized.

    • A device in a

      Status
      titleREADY state
shipment wakes up every 12 hours - except if the start shipping method is
      Status
      titlegeofence
      ,
      Status
      titleGEOFENCE or button
      , or
      Status
      titlespecify time
. In these cases, the device wakes up according to a wake-up schedule defined for the shipment.

  • A device in an active shipment wakes up according to the wake-up schedule defined in the shipment (i.e., 1 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour, 6 hour, or 12 hour intervals).

The newly defined wake-up interval is updated after the next wake-up that follows the shipment creation.

  • A device attempts to wake up immediately and report to the Controlant cloud when an

    Status
    titleAlarm STATE
occurs. After waking up to report the
    Status
    titleALARM STATE
, the device will return to the configured wake-up schedule.

  • The device wakes up every time the buttons are pressed, but no more than once every 30 minutes.

    • After a button has been pressed, the device wakes up every hour for 5 hours. After 5 hours, the device returns to the previous wake-up schedule.

    • If a device is not registered to a shipment or a wake-up schedule determined by the shipment, the device returns to the previous default wake-up schedule.

  • A device wakes up when plugged in to be charged. It wakes up when it's fully charged and again when it's removed from the charging station.

  • A device in shipment also wakes up when it exits

    Status
    titleflight mode
    .

A device does not detect that it is registered to a shipment unless it has woken up and reported to the Controlant cloud to receive the shipment message. The device behaves as if it's in

Status
titleStandby mode
until it has successfully received the shipment message.

If the start shipping method is set to

Status
titlespecify time
and the start time is set to a time in the future, the device uses the updated wake-up interval after the next wake-up, even though the shipment has not started.

Device not registered to a shipment - Standby mode

A device not registered to a shipment shows:

  • The latest temperature measurement of the device.

  • The battery level (charging or not charging) and the battery percentage (10-100%)

  • Connection status at the last wake-up.

    • If sync to the cloud was successful at the last wake-up, the display shows a

      Status
      titlecloud icon with a checkmark
      indicating a successful cloud connection.

    • If a connection fails or sync is not completed (e.g., due to a bad cellular connection), the display will show a

      Status
      titlecloud icon with an X
      .

    • The

      Status
      titlecloud CONNECTION status
is updated at every wake-up. A device in
      Status
      titlestandby mode
      wakes up every 12 hours.

The

Status
colourYellow
titleshipment LED
, and the
Status
colourRed
titleAlarm LED
should not be blinking on the device. A blinking
Status
colourYellow
titleShipment LED
indicates that the device is in a shipment or has received shipment information. A blinking
Status
colourRed
titleAlarm LED
indicates that an
Status
titleALARM STATE
has occurred.

Device during a shipment - Shipping mode

The device, during an active shipment, has the following features:

  • On the display:

    • Status
      titleshipping
is visible on the top left of the display in the
      Status
      titleshipping status
area. It appears after a shipment has been initiated with the
      Status
      colourGreen
      titleStart button
      or through the SCM platform.
      Status
      titleshipping
is displayed while the device is in shipping mode.

    • According to the severity notification setup on the SCM platform, the

      Status
      titleAlarm icon
      🔔 appears when an
      Status
      titleALARM STATE
      occurs.

  • The

    Status
    colourYellow
    titleShipment LED
blinks every 5 seconds while the shipment is active.

  • The

    Status
    colourRed
    titleAlarm LED
blinks every 5 seconds if an
    Status
    titleALARM STATE
has occurred during an active shipment.

  • The

    Status
    colourYellow
    titleShipment LED
turns on for 3 seconds and turns off as soon as the
    Status
    colourGreen
    titleStop button
    has had a valid press.

Charging the device

Remaining battery percentage

The

Status
titlebattery icon
and the battery percentage next to the symbol show the remaining battery percentage. The black bar size also shrinks as the battery level reduces.

Charging

The device can be charged using one of the following methods:

  • A dedicated charging station provided by Controlant, that can fit 5 devices at a time

  • A USB charging adapter

  • A computer USB port.

For optimal charging and performance, please follow these guidelines:

  • Charge each device for 6 hours and until 100% shows on the screen on the right side of the battery with a flash symbol.

  • Leaving the device on the charger for an extended period after it's fully charged (>24 hours) is not recommended for maintaining battery health, though it presents no safety hazard.

  • The charging area, or charging room, should be well ventilated and at room temperature (15-25°C / 59-77°F). The device is unable to charge if the ambient temperature is below 0°C / 32°F.

  • Make sure that the devices are standing upright and are not leaning against each other.

Info

The devices generate heat while charging, especially towards the end of the charging cycle. If the internal temperature of the device reaches 40°C / 104°F the charging process will automatically interrupt until the device cools down again.
If the loggers are leaning to the side or against each other, or the ambient temperature is too high, the devices may heat up, preventing the battery from fully charging.

Note

Since the device heats up while charging, so it should not be placed directly in a shipment straight after being disconnected from a charger. As the temperature sensor on the device is inside the USB connector cable, the device should be allowed at least 30 minutes to recover after charging for the temperature measurements to be accurate.

Display behavior while charging

Immediately as the device is plugged in to charge, a

Status
titleUSB ICON
shows up for a few seconds, briefly replacing the temperature values.

usb icon replacing temperature values

While the device is being charged, the battery icon has a flash symbol. The battery percentage is not displayed while charging.

If the internal temperature of the device reaches 40°C / 104°F the charging process will automatically interrupt until the device cools down again. A crossed-out battery icon appears on the screen, and stays on until charging resumes.

The battery is fully charged when 100% appears on the right side of the battery icon with the flash symbol.

The device wakes up one more time when fully charged, and then the wake-up interval goes back to every 12 hours.

Low power mode

Battery less than 10 percent

When the battery level goes below 10%, the device wakes up every 24 hours, whether in

Status
titleShipping mode
or
Status
titleStandby mode
. The device operates in this fashion until the battery level is 5%. The display indicates the low power mode with the following icon and message.

Battery 5 percent or less

The device enters

Status
titleHibernation mode
when the battery level reaches 5% or less. The display continues to show the Low power mode icon and message. Only the most critical functions are maintained in this mode until the battery is fully depleted. Temperature is measured and logged in the memory during
Status
titleHibernation mode
for as long as the battery lasts. Once a device is charged, it wakes up and sends all measurements logged in the memory to the Controlant cloud.

The following functionalities are stopped in

Status
titleHibernation mode
:

  • Modem wake-up

  • LED lights

  • Light sensor

  • Accelerometer

  • Barometer

  • Wake-up and LED behavior due to "button press" are switched off. Button events are still registered to memory.

The device must be charged to 15% or higher to recover from

Status
titleHibernation mode
.

Storing the device

When the device is not in use, please keep in mind the following optimal storage conditions:

  • Ambient temperature between 0°C and 25°C (32°F and 77°F).

  • Relative humidity below 80%.

  • Good cellular connection. The device always communicates with the Controlant Cloud, even when not in use. Make sure not to store it in metal enclosures, or areas where the connection is poor.

  • Be mindful of battery health. Use good inventory practices (i.e., first in, first out) to reduce the time a single device spends in storage. Never store a device with low battery.
