General

Challenging installations come in different forms. In general the following may affect

  1. The more objects, such as walls, doors, coolers etc., are occluding the direct line of sight between a logger and a gateway, the less wireless signal strength can be expected.
  2. The further away the logger is from the next gateway, the less signal quality
  3. Humidity in the environment. The more humid, the less signal quality

Unless there are specific problems, such as described in chapters "Problems" and "Challenging Environments" below, most issues can be solved by the following methods:

  1. Moving logger and gateway closer together, if possible.
  2. Moving obstacles and/or move logger/gateway to reduce effect of occluding objects between the devices.
  3. Try Controlant supported antennas with increased gain to increase signal quality
  4. Add a new gateway closer to the logger
  5. Aligning antennas of gateways and loggers parallel, as shown in the picture below.

Problems

If logger is close to gateway and, under normal conditions, should communicate with gateway the following issuse might apply.

#ProblemSolution
1Is antenna broken? If antenna is broken or has been damaged, signal quality can be significantly affected. A new antenna should be installed instead of the broken one.
2Is antenna securely attached to logger (SMA plug)?Make sure that antenna is securely connected to logger. If the antenna is loose or incorrectly attached to logger, the signal quality will be significantly reduced.
3Does the environment contain interfering noise? If there are multiple other wireless devices or other equipment that emits electromagnetic signals (industrial machinery and devices, burglar systems etc), it is possible that radio signal of the Controlant devices is being affected. Bringing devices closer together and adding extra gateways will improve signal quality.
4Is logger broken? If there are visible damages to the logger, even though it transmits data, such damages might affect wireless communication. In such cases, if the user is experiencing problems with wireless communication, a replacement is suggested.
5Is logger placed closed to metal?Wireless signal strength may be affected when logger and antenna is placed up to metal. To make sure that that is not the issue, you can try to move the loggers and gateways from the metal surface.

Challenging environment

In some cases, users want to monitor in spaces where wireless connectivity is hard to ensure. In such cases, different installation methods can be used.

Solution

1

The gateway doesn't connect to the Controlant cloud

The green LED indicator on the gateway ON for 3 sec and OFF for 0,5 sec or ON for 0,5 sec and OFF for 3 sec, see 1.3.4.4 Gateway LED light behavior

The User Interface indicates Data missing

Check if the gateway is connected to power, see 1.3.2 Quick Installation Guide - Gateway

Check if the Cellular antenna is fastened to the gateway, see 1.3.2 Quick Installation Guide - Gateway

Check the behavior of the LED light indicator on the gateway, see 1.3.4.4 Gateway LED light behavior

Check the cellular signal strength where the gateway is located, see 1.3.4.3 Gateway Cellular Connection

2

The gateway sometimes loses connection to the Controlant cloud

Data connection warning

Data missing in the User interface (Note the data is stored in the logger and it will be uploaded when it has a connection to the gateway)

It is likely that the gateway has a bad connection to the cellular network. Review the gateway location and installation, see 1.3.4 Device installation

3

Logger shows connection in the user interface

Data missing in the User interface (Note the data is stored in the logger and it will be uploaded when it has a connection to the gateway)

Check the location of the logger and make sure that the logger isn't surrounded by isolating materials such as metal, thick walls, liquid etc, see 1.3.4.1 Warehouse

Check the location of the gateway and the distribution of them, see 1.3.4.1 Warehouse

4

Logger sometimes loses connection to a gateway

Unnecessary data connection warnings

NO connection warning in the user interface

Improve the gateway distribution and gateway and logger location see 1.3.4.1 Warehouse
